My friend led a very different life from me- she went to Yale (I went to a good college, but it wasn't Ivy League and I dropped out my sophomore year), then apparently went on to become a successful theater director in Seattle. Her Facebook page is still there, full of friends and loved ones paying tribute to her, so obviously she was well-loved and made an impact on lots of people. But the tragedy of her premature death is a reminder that success is no guarantee against pain and suffering. She was a person who was marked by pain even when I knew her, having lost her father when she was in sixth grade. The thought of her dying young also seems so cruel, leaving her own children motherless as she was fatherless.
