While independently shopping at the local hiking/camping store, we have struck up a conversation. Within minutes, I'm finding myself fascinated by your relating of some of your more memorable outdoor experiences, but I am also just slightly distracted by the soft spicy aroma you are barely wearing. With a mischievous wink, you haul out your phone and begin showing me photos of your beloved vintage truck and your cat. You are enjoying your own laughter, and connect with my sense of humor. It is evident that you are sincerely interested in what other folks have to say, and that talking to me is not just another opportunity for you to dominate a one-sided conversation. You ask where there might be some live smooth jazz playing locally, or if there are any good movies playing in a theater or on tv. You comment on how nice it would be to be out in the wind on a motorcycle on such a beautiful evening. When the subject of Japanese culture and lifestyle comes up, you admit to being as fond of it as I am.
