Unlike other college students, Ihave acquired my career ambitions from several years of work experience rather than feeling an attraction to a field only encounteredin textbooks and contemplated in theory. Ten years ago, after three years of college, I interrupted my education to explore alternate goals. I trained as a chef, and after working in the field here and abroad, came eventually to spend four years working as a live-in governess. This feeling led to my decision to complete formal education, with a concentration in developmental and educational psychology. I am very interested in the educational process; how children learn and, more importantly, why they do not. I would like to explore this field as a student and eventually as a researcher. I have compiled this record while working a full forty hour week in order to defray the costs of my education. I currently work as a proofreader for several financial houses, Morgan Stanley and Shearson Lehman, chief among them.Copyediting work on investment materials and financial reports is a strenuous mental exercise which takes up time that I would prefer to utilize in studying and research. I am therefore applying for this scholarship in the hope that I will be able to reduce my work hours somewhat, and thus devote more of my mental energies to my studie
